Websites are gaining a new user group: AI agents. They don't just read pages; they search for structured information, check access rules, discover interfaces, and prepare actions.

A good website must therefore continue to be fast, easy to understand, and accessible to people—while at the same time being able to reliably explain to machines what content and features it contains.

SEO is here to stay—but the demands are growing

Search engine optimization makes content discoverable. Agent capability takes it a step further: Can an automated system not only discover the page, but also clearly understand its meaning, responsibilities, offerings, and possible next steps?

In 2026, Cloudflare introduced an Agent Readiness Score. Among other things, the scanner evaluates discoverability, machine-readable content, bot rules, protocol and API discovery, and—where relevant—commerce signals. Not every website needs all of these features. However, the assessment model highlights the direction in which digital touchpoints are evolving.

Five Levels of an Agent-Enabled Website

  1. Discoverability: clean internal links, a sitemap, canonical tags, and clear indexing rules.
  2. Easy-to-understand content: clear headings, unambiguous terms, reliable facts, and structured data.
  3. Access Rules: Differentiated guidelines for search, training, and automated retrieval.
  4. Functional Discovery: APIs, MCP offerings, or other interfaces are published only where there is a genuine use case.
  5. Secure Operations: Authentication, permissions, confirmation steps, and error handling protect transactions.

Machine-readability starts with good communication

Many measures benefit both users and search engines. Precise page titles, short introductions, semantic HTML structures, meaningful anchor text, FAQ content, and structured data reduce room for interpretation.

A poorly structured website doesn't automatically improve just because an additional file is created for AI crawlers. Agent Readiness starts with the content and the information architecture.

Not every website needs an MCP server right away

New protocols are exciting, but they aren't an end in themselves. A consulting website benefits more immediately from clearly defined services, client testimonials, author information, schedules, and contact details. An online store or platform can also provide product data, availability, and transaction functions in a machine-readable format.

The recommended order is:

  1. Revise the content and technical foundation,
  2. Clarify the access and data strategy,
  3. define real-world agent use cases,
  4. Only then should you enable additional protocols and actions.

The website becomes a digital user interface

For Heads of Digital, agent-readiness isn’t just an isolated SEO project. It brings together communication, data quality, architecture, security, and customer experience. Those who work in a structured way today not only improve visibility in AI systems but also—in most cases—enhance the quality of the website for real visitors.
