AI Bots as Friends? Digital Intimacy Needs Human Boundaries
AI can simulate closeness. It cannot replace a mutual relationship.
AI companions listen, are always available, and respond without showing any signs of impatience. This can be helpful for people who feel lonely or want to sort through their thoughts. At the same time, a new form of digital closeness is emerging, for which social norms have yet to be established.
Why the bond can become so strong
People respond to attention, remembrance, and appropriate language. A system that knows personal details and expresses itself empathetically can quickly come across as a human counterpart. But the relationship is not reciprocal: The system has no needs of its own, no responsibilities, and no human experience.
Guardrails Instead of a Culture War
- AI companions should remain clearly recognizable as systems.
- Minors and vulnerable individuals require special protection.
- Product design or monetization must not be allowed to reinforce dependency.
- In times of crisis, clear guidance on humanitarian aid must be in place.
This distinction is important in the workplace as well. AI can serve as a tool for reflection or a learning partner, but it cannot replace a manager, a colleague, or professional advice.
Conclusion: Digital closeness can provide relief. It should serve as a bridge to human connection—not a silent substitute for it.
